Pastoral Counseling Skills is a 13-module training curriculum designed to provide pastors and others in ministry with the skills they need to provide effective pastoral or ministry counseling to those in their churches or organizations.
CV Ministries believes that the appropriate and necessary role of pastoral counseling has gotten lost in the Christian counseling movement. Most information related to counseling in the church emphasizes the need to refer people in the church to counseling professionals, rather than focusing on the primary role of the pastor or other church leaders in counseling members of the congregation and the community. It is our belief that pastors need to assume a primary role in counseling members of their churches or communities, while at the same time knowing when to refer to counseling professionals or psychologists.
This curriculum fills a need identified by a large number of seminary graduates, pastors and church leaders. Recent surveys indicate that most pastors believe they were inadequately prepared to face the large counseling needs in their churches, and that they want to be trained to provide effective counseling to those with emotional, mental, marital, family and spiritual needs.
The training is provided from an adult learning perspective. This means that the focus of the training is on benefiting from the experience and knowledge of all participants, while each of you learn new skills and information that you can incorporate into your ministry.
There are two versions of the curriculum. The 13-module curriculum provides 3 days of training with fellow pastors and church and ministry leaders. It provides participants with an understanding of the interaction between emotional, mental and spiritual health, identifies the pastor’s role in counseling, and teaches a variety of skills that can be tailored to the participant’s personality and counseling style. Participants will have the opportunity to practice the skills and attain competence in pastoral counseling. The shorter, 5-module curriculum provides 8 hours of training and also teaches a variety of counseling skills but in less detail and without the opportunity to practice the skills.
The curriculum can be provided to the staff of large churches, to pastors or leaders from several smaller churches, or to a combination of the above. Training sessions are limited to 20 participants in order to ensure effective interaction and individual benefit to all who attend.
